What We Do

St. John of the Cross Parish was established in 1925. Within the year, a group of women who oversaw cleaning the altar and maintaining the upkeep of all altar linens and priestly vestments organized St. John of the Cross Altar Society. Today, the mission of the society is to serve God by caring for the altar needs of the church. Like Martha in Luke 10:30, members of the Altar Society choose to remain in the background and provide the services needed by the parish.

The Altar Society has the primary responsibility for the physical care of the sacristy and sanctuary, establishing and carrying out a regular routine of cleaning and maintaining the altar. All the women of the parish are members of the St. John of the Cross Altar Society and form weekly cleaning crews to vacuum, dust, clean the holy water fonts, change the candles, and remove old flowers. The Altar Society purchases the weekly altar flowers and those for special occasions. The Altar Society also provides monetary support to ensure the maintenance and repair of accessories used in the ceremonies of the Church and provides the labor for this purpose. Members perform duties for the Glory of God.

In addition to the purchase of altar flowers, in the past year the Altar Society has provided for the altar breads, wine, linens, Advent candles, candle oil and wicks, incense, chalice, paten, and Father’s vestments. When needed, the Altar Society will purchase the Mass book, Missal, and Lectionary.

The Altar Society funding is accomplished through the annual Barbecue Dinner held on the second Sunday in November. A silent auction has been implemented during these functions to bring in more money (All items are donated for the silent auction).

You can support the Altar Society by purchasing the weekly altar flowers in honor of the memory of someone or some event. The altar flowers cost is $50.00 per week. Call the office to make arrangements to dedicate the altar flowers to honor someone or in remembrance of someone.
